Alison Kahn

Dr. Alison Kahn (Creative Director)

BA (Hons), MA (London), MPhil (Oxon), DPhil (Oxon)

Alison trained to be a documentary filmmaker, museum curator and anthropologist at Goldsmiths College, University of London and the University of Oxford. She has worked as a producer and director for several broadcast channels including Discovery Channel with her own commissioned series, PBS, and is a member of a BBC Education Steering group.

As a specialist in visual and material anthropology she is interested in the use of  multimedia as a tool for research and promotes a cross-cultural understanding of visual culture.

She digitized 16mm film footage from the Pitt Rivers Museum in a project called Captured by Women: connecting the objects of the Pitt Rivers Museum to its film archives. The documentary produced as part of this project, funded by the National Digital Archive Fund and Screen South, is available on the Pitt Rivers website. Ursula Graham Bower- Pathways through her archive is a two-volumed ebook curated to present Bower’s life-story, films, photographs and object collections as an exhibition in a book. Alison is Media Curator for an AHRC-funded Interactive/Multimedia Ebook project at the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at the University of Oxford. She is also part of a two-year, AHRC funded project (a collaboration between UCL, King’s College, University of London and Oxford Brookes) researching the Future of the Academic Book.

Dr. Maarten Roos (Project Manager)

Maarten is an all-round independent filmmaker and planetary scientist, passionate about and specialized in factual and educational productions on science & technology, music & art. He has made films for institutions such as European Space Agency, the Italian Space Agency and the Paris Observatory, the VU medical centre in Amsterdam, and collaborated on a Discovery Channel Canada production about Mars exploration. In 2011 was commissioned to make a science documentary for Portuguese national TV channel RTP2, which was aired in 2012 (Between Mars and Svalbard). He made several independent documentaries, one of which was broadcast several times in the Netherlands (Spiral Galaxy, 2009) and another (Living the Tradition) recently won the Best Documentary Feature award at the Erie International Film Festival.

Apart from film related work he is doing a research project about the effectiveness of scientific videos on the internet.
